OUTLOOK
-          PORTLAND CAME OUT LIKE GANGBUSTERS THIS SEASON.  LAMARCUS ALDRIDGE ELEVATED HIS GAME PUTTING UP 24 & 11 WHILE PG DAMIAN LILLARD IS AVERAGING 21-4-6.  THEY ARE SURROUNDED BY NICOLAS BATUM, ROBIN LOPEZ & WESLEY MATTHEWS TO FORM AN EXCITING GROUP THAT HAS PORTLAND THINKING BIG FOR THE FIRST TIME IN AWHILE.  PORTLAND WON’T HAVE ANY DRAFT PICKS THIS YEAR BUT THEY’LL BE RETURNING 13 OR 14 PLAYERS NEXT SEASON FROM THIS YEAR’S TEAM.

ALDRIDGE & MATTHEWS ARE IN THEIR PRIME WHILE BATUM, LOPEZ & LILLARD ARE ALL 25 YEARS & UNDER.  C.J. MCCOLLUM IS STILL GETTING HIS FEET WET BUT LOOKS LIKE A GREAT SIXTH MAN CANDIDATE MOVING FORWARD.  THE BLAZERS HAVE TWO LEGITIMATE STARS IN ALDRIDGE & LILLARD AND A PLETHORA OF YOUNG TALENT & REASONABLE CONTRACTS.  THE BLAZERS’ PLAY HAS SLIPPED OF LATE BUT THEY SEEM TO BE IN A GREAT POSITION FOR THE FUTURE WITH THEIR CURRENT UNIT AND FLEXIBILITY.  HOW THEY FARE IN THE PLAYOFFS THIS SEASON SHOULD STEER THEIR OFFSEASON MOVES BUT MINOR TWEAKS RATHER THAN MAJOR MOVES SHOULD BE ALL THAT IS REQUIRED.

OUTLOOK
-          SACRAMENTO MADE A SPLASH BY ACQUIRING RUDY GAY FOR WHAT SEEMED TO BE SPARE PARTS.  HE HAS PLAYED GREAT SINCE COMING OVER BUT WILL HE STAY OR OPT OUT THIS OFFSEASON.  ISAIAH THOMAS TOOK OVER THE STARTING JOB AND IS NOW AVERAGING 20 PTS & 6 ASTS PER GAME BUT HE’LL BE HITTING RESTRICTED FREE AGENCY AFTER THE SEASON AND SHOULD BE PRETTY EXPENSIVE TO RETAIN.  DEMARCUS COUSINS WAS GIVEN A MAX DEAL AND IS PUTTING UP 22 & 12 AT 23 YEARS OF AGE.  HE’S THE FRANCHISE PLAYER MOVING FORWARD AND THE LEADER OF THE POOR MAN’S BIG THREE THAT MAY BE OVER BEFORE IT BEGINS.  FOR ALL THE HYPE AROUND THESE 3 GUYS SACRAMENTO IS THE 4TH WORST TEAM IN THE LEAGUE.  ROOKIE SG BEN MCLEMORE HAS STARTED SLOW AND THE TEAM IS SADDLED WITH SOME PRETTY BAD CONTRACTS.

THEY WERE ABLE TO FLIP MARCUS THORNTON TO THE NETS FOR JASON TERRY & REGGIE EVANS BUT IT DOESN’T DO MUCH IN THE WAY OF CAP SAVINGS.  THE BIRGHT SIDE IS THE 4TH OVERALL PICK COULD GO A LONG WAY TO PUSHING THIS TEAM TOWARDS THE PLAYOFFS IF GAY STAYS & THOMAS IS RETAINED.  THE DOWN SIDE IS IF GAY LEAVES & THOMAS IS OFFERED A MASSIVE OVERPAY.  REGARDLESS, THE NEW KINGS OWNERS ARE PROVING THEY’RE HERE TO WIN AND ALTHOUGH SACRAMENTO HAS A LONG WAY TO GO, THEY AT LEAST ARE TRYING AGAIN.

-          VIKTOR SANIKIDZE (F, 2004-42) – ZARAGOZA (SPAIN), FA IN 2014
OUTLOOK
-          THE SPURS WON’T DIE.  THE AGELESS WONDERS, TIM DUNCAN & MANU GINOBILI, PAIRED WITH TONY PARKER CONTINUE TO KEEP SAN ANTONIO IN PERENNIAL CONTENTION.  DUNCAN IS STILL AVERAGING A DOUBLE-DOUBLE AT AGE 37, PARKER IS AVERAGING 18 & 6 IN LIMITED MINUTES & GINOBILI PUTS UP 12-3-5 OFF THE BENCH.  KAWHI LEONARD DIDN’T BREAK OUT LIKE MANY THOUGHT BUT HE’S 22 AND HAS QUIETLY HAD A GOOD YEAR OUTSIDE OF THE INJURIES.

THE BEST RUN ORGANIZATION & HEAD COACH IN THE NBA ALWAYS SEEM TO FIND PLAYERS TO STEP UP WHEN NEEDED.  THEY PLAY UNSELFISH BASKETBALL AND JUST WIN.  THEY HAVE ALMOST ANOTHER WHOLE TEAM’S WORTH OF PLAYERS WHO THEY HOLD DRAFT RIGHT TO INCLUDING THEIR LAST 2 SECOND ROUND PICKS, MARCUS DENMON & DESHAUN THOMAS, WHO COULD BE ON THE ROSTER NEXT YEAR.  THEY ALSO HAVE ANOTHER 4 OR SO PLAYERS THAT COULD MOVE STATESIDE IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS.  THEY DRAFT WELL, PLAY WELL & MAKE ALL THE RIGHT MOVES.  THEY’LL BE IN CONTENTION AGAIN THIS YEAR AND ARE SET UP TO STAY COMPETITIVE EVEN AFTER DUNCAN’S EVENTUAL RETIREMENT.  THE ENVY OF THE LEAGUE.

OUTLOOK
-          THE RAPTORS WERE SUPPOSED TO BE SITTING IN THE LOTTERY NOT ATOP THE ATLANTIC DIVISON AFTER THE RUDY GAY TRADE.  DEMAR DEROZAN & KYLE LOWRY HAVE LED THIS TEAM ALL SEASON WITH CAREER YEARS.  TERRENCE ROSS & JONAS VALANCIUNAS ARE DEVELOPING NICELY AND THE BOUNTY OF SPARE PARTS THEY GOT FROM THE RUDY TRADE HAVE FIT IN WELL GIVING TORONTO SOLID DEPTH.  LOWRY’S IMPENDING FREE AGENCY WILL BE INTERESTING AS HE’S BEEN ONE OF THE BEST POINT GUARDS THIS SEASON.  ONCE AN AFTERTHOUGHT, HE’S NOW AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE FUTURE.

TORONTO WILL HAVE AROUND 23 MILLION IN CAP SPACE (IF THEY GUARANTEE AMIR JOHNSON’S 7M) AND DIFFICULT DECISIONS WITH LOWRY AND RESTRICTED FREE AGENTS PATRICK PATTERSON & GREIVIS VASQUEZ.  THEY’LL HAVE OPTIONS AND A NICE COLLECTION OF YOUNG TALENT THAT COULD BEGIN TO ATTRACT MORE QUALITY FREE AGENT OPTIONS.  GM MASAI UJIRI PROVED IN DENVER THAT HE CAN EVALUATE YOUNG PLAYERS AND MORE IMPORTANTLY WIN HIS TRADES.  TORONTO COULD WIN THEIR FIRST DIVISION TITLE THIS YEAR AND ACTUALLY HAVE HOME COURT ADVANTAGE IN THE FIRST ROUND.  THAT ALONE SPEAKS VOLUMES TO THE CULTURE CHANGE OVER THE BORDER.

OUTLOOK
-          WITH DERON WILLIAMS FLOUNDERING IN BROOKLYN, UTAH IS BEGINNING TO SEE DEVELOPMENT IN THEIR YOUNG PLAYERS.  DERRICK FAVORS WAS LOCKED UP WITH A 4-YEAR EXTENSION THAT COULD PROVE TO BE VERY TEAM FRIENDLY.  ROOKIE POINT GUARD TREY BURKE HAS LOOKED GREAT SINCE GETTING HEALTHY.  GORDON HAYWARD IS THE TEAM’S BEST PLAYER, AVERAGING 16-5-5, WHILE ALEC BURKS SHOULD BE IN THE RUNNING FOR SIXTH MAN OF THE YEAR.

THE JAZZ PICKED UP A COUPLE OF 1ST ROUND PICKS FROM GOLDEN STATE TO ABSORB 20 MILLION WORTH OF EXPIRING CONTRACTS.  THEY’LL HAVE THEIR OWN TOP 10 PICK TO GO WITH ONE IN THE LOW 20’S THIS YEAR PLUS OVER 35 MILLION DOLLARS IN CAP SPACE.   UTAH WILL LIKELY MATCH ANY OFFER FOR HAYWARD AND ADD TO THIS EXTREMELY YOUNG CORE OF PROMISING TALENTS.  UTAH WILL HAVE THE PIECES TO BE SCARY IN A FEW YEARS WITH CAREFUL DRAFTING AND SMART FREE AGENT SIGNINGS.  IT STILL MIGHT BE ANOTHER YEAR OR TWO TO THINK PLAYOFFS BUT THAT COULD CHANGE WITH ALL THAT MONEY TO THROW AROUND.

OUTLOOK

-          THE WIZARDS WILL HAVE AROUND 18 MILLION TO PLAY WITH THIS OFFSEASON.  TREVOR ARIZA, MARCIN GORTAT & TREVOR BOOKER (RFA) WILL BECOME FREE AGENTS AND THE TEAM’S 1ST ROUND PICK IS GOING TO PHOENIX.  THE BACKCOURT IS SET WITH JOHN WALL & BRADLEY BEAL BUT NOT MUCH ELSE IS.  NENE IS STILL OWED ANOTHER 26M WHILE LAST YEAR’S 3RD OVERALL PICK OTTO PORTER HAS PROVEN NOTHING YET.  WASHINGTON CAN’T AFFORD FOR HIM TO BECOME THE NEXT JAN VESELY.  EVEN WITH ALL THAT, WASHINGTON MAY CURRENTLY BE ONE OF THE BEST 4 TEAMS IN THE EAST WITH A FRANCHISE POINT GUARD IN PLACE.

THEY HAVE A BAD HISTORY OF OVERPAYING UNDERACHIEVING PLAYERS AND WILL HAVE TO MAKE SMART DECISIONS THIS OFFSEASONS TO COMPLEMENT THEIR YOUNG STARS.  IT WOULD BE SURPRISING IF GORTAT WASN’T RE-SIGNED AFTER IT COST THEM A 1ST ROUND PICK.  STILL NEXT YEAR’S ROSTER SHOULD BE QUITE DIFFERENT BUT HOPEFULLY BETTER PUT TOGETHER.  WASHINGTON SHOULD CONTINUE GETTING YOUNGER AND GIVE WALL ATHLETIC WINGS & PLAYERS WHO CAN SPREAD THE FLOOR TO PLAY OFF HIS STRENGTH OF GETTING INTO THE LANE.  THIS WILL DEFINITELY BE A VERY IMPORTANT OFFSEASON FOR THE FRANCHISE WHICH COULD PUSH THEM INTO CONTENTION OR SET THEM BACK ANOTHER COUPLE OF YEARS.
